What does a copilot do?
A SIEM copilot is an assistant inside a security console. An analyst asks it to summarize an incident, explain a log line, draft a search or suggest next steps, and it answers. It does not decide which alert to open next. It is as busy as the analyst using it.
What does an agent do?
An AI SOC analyst platform starts from the queue. It picks up each alert, gathers evidence from the tools it is connected to, and reaches a verdict: benign, needs a person, or malicious. Depending on the product and your settings, it may then act within limits you set or hand a recommendation to a person.
Why does the difference matter so much?
Picture a Monday morning with a weekend of alerts waiting. With a copilot, the queue is exactly as long as it was on Friday evening; your analysts will clear it faster than before, but they still clear it alert by alert. With an agent, the first pass has already happened: most alerts carry a verdict and the evidence behind it, and people start from the ones the agent flagged.
The same logic applies to alerts that are closed today without anyone looking. A copilot does not reach them, because nobody asks about them.
Are the categories merging?
Partly. Some AI SOC platforms include a question-and-answer mode of their own: Conifers added Ask Conifers in March 2026. 7AI announced Federated SIEM in July 2026; 7AI states it brings security data into the platform so it can be searched and correlated across sources. On the SIEM side, Splunk describes Splunk Enterprise Security as integrated with agentic AI, with SOAR now native inside it. So the question to ask a vendor is not "copilot or agent" in the abstract but "does it start work on its own, and on which alerts?"
How do you choose?
- If your team reads every alert the same day, start with a copilot or with nothing new: speed per alert is the gain.
- If a backlog builds in busy weeks, look at an agent for the first pass and keep people on decisions.
- If many alerts are closed unread, a copilot alone will not change that.
The fit finder asks exactly this in its alert volume question.
What should you ask a copilot vendor?
Ask whether the assistant can start work without a prompt, which data it can see beyond the console it lives in, and what it records about the questions analysts ask. Ask too whether it can draft detections, and who reviews them before they go live. The answers tell you whether you are buying speed for analysts or a first pass on the queue.
